Coming soon: Mandatory two-step authentication for most members
Hey everyone! We're updating our safety and security policy to require two-step authentication (also known as two-factor or multi-factor authentication) for most of our members, and highly recommending it for everyone else.
What is two-step authentication?
In short, it's one of the best ways to prevent unauthorized access to your account. Once enabled, you'll be asked to enter a one-time code when you log into your TravelJoy account, and you'll get that code from your mobile device.
If you check the "Remember this device" box when entering your one-time code, you won't be prompted for a code when using the same device and browser in the future.
You can see our guide on setting up two-step authentication here.
Why make this change?
Account security is massively important, and two-step authentication protects your account much more effectively than just a password. For our many members handling direct payments, this update helps ensure that their payouts are safe and secure.
How do you set up two-step authentication?
If you don't have an authenticator app on your phone, install one. We recommend Google Authenticator, which can be found in the Play Store or App Store.
Log into your account and visit Settings -> Security. When you click the option to enable two-step authentication, you'll be given some options. Choose the "Authenticator" option and scan the QR code, then enter the code.
(While you also have the option to request a code via text message or phone call, these methods are less preferred for the reasons below.)
Why do we recommend an authenticator app?
Authenticator apps work from anywhere in the world.
If you're ever "out of range" and can't receive texts or calls -- such as during a cruise -- you won't be able to get codes that way, so you will lose access to TravelJoy until you're back in range.
Authenticator apps are more secure.
These apps are not only more flexible than codes via text message or phone call, they're also safer for a number of important reasons (this link goes to a third party security site).
When is this happening?
We've started rolling out this change today (July 10th) and we expect that the full rollout will be completed in a few weeks. However, you don't have to wait! You can enable two-step authentication today by visiting Settings -> Security.
